We travelled yesterday to Virgin Media Park to play the Semi final of the Bank of Ireland U16 league Cup against Bandon on what was a wet and windy day for Rugby. Bandon won the toss and decided to play with the wind, and from the off were intent on putting pressure on our lads who defended heroically throughout the this game, the lads in fairness did survive a few scary moments but they always seemed to recover from any errors that were made. First chance of scoring went to Bandon when we conceded a penalty just inside our 22, Bandon chose to kick for the posts but the kick sailed wide, so both teams remained scoreless. Bandon tried to keep our boys pinned in our own 22 but a few line breaks from Liam & Sean and some hard carries from Mike, Brian, Jack & Emmanuel kept the Bandon honest as we approached mid way through the first half.We then conceded a penalty for off side our 22 for off side, again Bandon chose a kick at goal on this occasion were successful making the score 0-3 to Bandon. The concession of this score seemed to sting the lads into action and 5 minutes later after some good phases of play we worked our way into the Bandon 22, Brian made a great carry but was brought down just short of the Bandon line, but from the resulting ruck a brilliant bit of opportunism by Donnacha saw there was no one home and snipped to score under the posts giving Sean the opportunity to convert which he duelly did, the score now Old Christians 7-3 Bandon. The score remained this Way till halftime. The second half began and with the wind at our backs the lads began to turn the screw and began to squeeze the life out of Bandon by playing the game premiraly in the Bandon 22, when Bandon tried to exit they were met with some furious tackling from our defensive line which was superb all afternoon, this pressure eventually told when in the 43 minute Oisin Purdy pounced on a Bandon handling error and kicked ahead to score in the Corner, Sean made a valiant attempt at what was a difficult conversion but it dropped short. Score was now Old Christians 12-3 Bandon. The boys continued to apply the majority of the pressure and Bandon rarely ventured into the Old Christians 22 for the remainder of the game. Old Christians seeing the game out 12-3. The boys now contest the Final against Ennis Venue and date to be decided. This is a brilliant achievement for this group in reaching what is the Premier Competition in Munster in this age group. So huge Congratulations to the whole panel who have all contributed at some stage or another, this wouldn't be possible without a complete squad effort. We like to take this opportunity to wish a speedy recovery to Orin Hyde & Ronan Doherty who both recently had emergency surgery. We would also like to thank all of you that have supported the team throughout the season Parents and supporters alike.
