Under 17 League Semi-Final
Charleville 27 Old Christians 0
Old Christians league campaign ended last Saturday morning in ignominious defeat. What looked like certain victory in the first 20 minutes turned into a rout by the final whistle.
The Under 17’s started proceedings and took the game to the hosts totally dominating play in the early stages, remaining deep in their 22. During this period the boys should have had the game sown up with 3 or 4 tries; Tadhg McNealy came closest when a double tackle took him down within a foot of the try line (even the referee awarded it and then reversed his decision). From a clearance kick James Power collected on the far side and again looked to be in for a score but was pushed into touch. The resulting line out was won by Steve Springhall and fed out to the back line, Tadhg’s cross field kick set Jake O’Leary on another penetrating run only for an unkind bounce to beat him. Christians kept pressing and from a scrum on the 5m line Conor Meaney drove on but again could not breach the Charleville defence.
On 19minutes against the run of play Charleville broke and but for a fantastic tackle by Shane Hennessey who tracked the runner over 30m to take him into touch, Charleville would have registered the first try.
However a needless penalty from a ruck straight from the line out gave Charleville a 3 point lead and appeared to turn the match for them as they grew in confidence and Old Christians lost it.
From this point on the boys stopped playing and indiscipline and lack of application resulted in them getting what they fully deserved a 27-0 drubbing.
