Cobh Pirates 26 vs Old Christians 17
Rathcooney, 11:30AM
Old Christians 17 Cobh 2Having to field without a number of regulars, including the experienced Sam O'Connell, we were well in this game, but maybe a little inexperience cost us.
The visitors had a great start, with a try in the opening minutes. We came back however and camped on the visitors line but could not score. Cobh then broke away for a converted try for a 12-0 half time lead.
When the visitors quickly added another converted try to take the score out to 19-0, things looked bad for us despite playing quite well. We then lost Brendan McCarthy, who was suffering from a stomach upset but we stuck to our task. Ten minutes later, Philip Purcell had his first try, converted by brother John. Minutes later, Robert Jones went close, before Philip had his second try and when he added a third with 7 mins left, the score stood at 17-19 to the visitors.
We threw caution to the wind, but just failed to score. Then with the last play called, we had to run the penalty. Unfortunately we turned over possesion and Cobh added an undeserved try.
Considering that this team had to virtually start from scratch this season, they have come a long way quickly and coach Rob and staff must be quietly pleased with the way things are going.
While Philip Purcell was man of the match, I was also impressed by Kevin Walsh, Ruairí Kennedy and Scott O'Connell.
