St. Mary's 21 vs Old Christians 15

Rathcooney, 14:30PM

High flying St. Mary's came to town today and with only a bare bones panel available
to us, we were not too hopeful before the game. Our under strength panel however, gave
their all and a losing bonus point was well deserved.
With Sean Meaney marshalling his young team mates, and using his experience to kick for position, we took an early lead with a fine John Marnell penalty. These were sensible tactics as though the visitors were on top in the scrums, we caused them all sorts of problems on their own throw.
We were to hold this lead for some twenty minutes, before Mary's hit a purple patch and added two converted tries before the break.
With so many young players in the team, we could have folded as the second half began and us behind by 14pts to 3, but we hung in there and ten minutes into the second half, we won a penalty in the Mary's twenty two.
Spotting his chance, Sam O'Connell, tapped to himself and crashed over before the defence could re-group.
We were now just four points behind at 14 to 10 and battling gamely.
Some ten minutes later, Mary's got another converted try, but we kept plugging away. Another great break by Sam, saw him tackled just short of the line, but Gael was on his shoulder to take his popped pass and touch down to gain a losing bonus point.
Mary's are a good team, but this was a battling performance and one of our better displays of the season.

Better days ahead ?
