Clonakilty 54 vs Old Christians 19

Clonakilty, 14:30PM

With five 18 year olds starting, this was always going to be a big ask for us and we needed a good start. This was my second time seeing Clon this year and what I noticed was, that they are very quick to re-aline, (in attack or defence), lightening quick on the counter, and so you need to play tightly against them.

Ten minutes in a loose kick, minutes later a risky off load and we are 14 points down. For that second try, we managed to make three tackles on our line, but each time a red and green jersey appear to take the off load. By the fifteenth minute, we were 21 points behind and had yet to visit the Clon 22.

Twenty minutes in, we finally made the twenty two and Alan O'Connell crashed over from a scrum, with Sean Meaney adding the points. Two more Clon tries before the break however, saw the West Cork side lead 35-7 at the break.

The second half was more even. We looked dangerous when we did attack and frequently broke the Clonakilty line, but had trouble finishing things off. Clonakilty added two more tries before Craig O'Connell got over for a good try, cousin Ryan adding the points.

Four minutes later, Alan O'Connell added his second try of the game and we then went looking for an unlikely 4 try bonus point. It was not to be however and the West Cork side broke away for one more try with the last play of the game.

I often use the old Irish saying, "tagann ciall le h-aois", sense, (wisdom) comes with age and it is at the heart of our topsy turvy season. We looked good at times with the ball in hand, but struggled at times to re-aline against a speedy Clon side.

There were some decent performances all the same, Sean Meaney was solid, making some fine tackles. Does Peter Twohig ever have a bad game?, while Alan O'Connell rampaged around the pitch causing havoc. Indeed his magnificent take from our last kick off, almost yielded a four try bonus point.

Among the young lads, Jeff Hodder had a decent game. He did not see too much off the ball in attack, but he never committs the winger's mortal sin, i.e., allowing yourself to be bundled into touch and usually make some yards.

That was the last League game of the year, we have the Junior Cup v Muskerry on Sunday 14th Jan 2018 and the League Roller Coaster resumes with the visit of Killarney on Sunday 4th Feb 2018.
