Saturday 18th Feb 2012
On a cold but bright morning two U12 squads set out to have a mini blitz with a traveling Cork Con squad. The rain held off until well into the second game when the mettle of both squads was tested with a severe hailstone shower. This was nothing compared to the pace and intensity of play on the pitch. Con came away ahead on the day on scores but both teams won the hearts and minds of the supporters for an outstanding morning of rugby played in very difficult conditions. (One wag was heard to ask why OCRFC could not borrow some of the sand from Con's pitches!). Well done to all who played, supported, coached or just were there with special thanks to Kevin and Connor (Cork Con coaches). Returns matches in Con on 03Mar. Pictures below

Away to Sundays Well
Our squad of 20 were hosted by sundays Well this Saturday at their pitch at Frankfield. Under a clear blue sky an sunshine the cold and wet ground didn't look too uninviting ( to the coaches anyway) . With 20 players each we agreed to divide into two equal strength teams and played a mini blitz. All players got over 40 minutes of game time today which was greta to see. And whats more they rose to the challenge and game a display to be proud of. Despite some rough play and a few heated moments the squad kept their composure and played possibly their best games of the season. Communication by all, rucking by the forwards and inter-play between backs was fantastic and led to a series of tries that were right off the training pitch.

The OCRFC U12 squad assembled in Glanmire on a sunny morning on a day full of promise. With sun shining the group of 39 including some hardy supporters set out for Newcastlewest (NCW) on the first step of our trip. We were greeted and feted by a fantastic squad of coaches, players and supporters who had re-arranged their day to play a friendly match with our squad. Juggling and arm twisting meant that everybody got a game and most of our squad came away with a taste of being rucked by a very disciplined Limerick team who gave us a great game. After the game we were feted with soup, sandwiches and cakes setting a new standard in hospitality. A sincere thank you to NCW again for their hospitality. (Barry H, there may be demand for Musgrave Park tickets to satisfy a NCW return trip!)
Onwards to the next event of the day and after battling our way to the gates of LIT and parking up we then set about getting everybody onto the south terraces with a mixture of south, east and west terrace tickets. Job done we settled in to watch the first round of this year's Heineken Cup campaign with Munster battling Northhampton Saints. Penned into the back of the terrace we had a birds eye view as try followed try with only one allowed for Munster. By 74th minute we were facing a day spoiler as Northhampton led 20-21. Then magic. 41 phases, 4 minutes into extra time and Rog slotted over the drop goal to put smiles back on our faces. JOb done and pitch invasion over (what goes on tour....) we hit the road for our return journey to Cork.
It just kept getting better and when we eventually arrived in the Corbett Court for our grub they even had the match highlights on.
Weary and tired we returned to Glanmire just before the cinderella hour after another great day of rugby.
Special thanks to Gary for all the organising, Hugh for the on pitch coaching, our traveling supporters, to Mark, Mike and Martin who are now established front row coaches and to a very patient Mike the bus driver. Special thanks to all at Newcastlewest who looked after us so well.
Training again on Tuesday night and next game is at home next Saturday to Highfield.
Christians and NCW line up for a photo.

A rare bright and sunny day at Rathcooney held the promise of something special for the U12 team. The large squad of 24 (of 32 now registered) warmed up on the top pitch in anticipation of the challenge of a visiting Dolphin squad of 12. 30 minutes later and the promise was undelivered. A hungrier Dolphin squad, assisted by some poor refereeing decisions (they just don't understand me!), claimed victory by a small margin. Sterling performance by the backs in running the ball, a number of excellent defensive plays and some heavy tackles, was not enough to overcome a visiting team who just seemed to want this result more.
Thanks again to the large crowd who came to support, tot he parents who turned out a great bunch of young men, to Martin, Mark and Mick for the extra coaching support and to Mick McCollam for his camera work
After the formal game which was a sporting and friendly outing, the host teams coach decided it was time for a masterclass in mini rugby rules and refereeing. Everybody was up for the extra 20 minutes where two home teams pitted their skills against each other with gusto and energy. Three tries later and a little wiser the players headed home to enjoy the last of the mid term break.
Next week sees us training only on Tuesday night. We will then be heading to Newcastlewest on Saturday for a friendly match before heading to the Munster Heineken Cup season opener in Thomond Park against Northhampton Saints.

A sunny but cold day.

Breaking clear.

Escape ?

Ready to tackle.

Score.

Under 12 Report

Back to normal this Saturday morning after the "Guest Trainer" our own Dave stepped in to take training on Tuesday. Dave was assisted by Mark and Martin while the regular coaches attended to work commitments. Training ran well on Saturday under Gary's guidance although there is still a reluctance on the part of some to embrace the muck and wet and go for that tackle! Weather was pretty poor but we still managed to squeeze in a great session and a short match before the U14s took possession of the pitch. Next Sat sees us pitch up against Charleville at home and the following week against Dolphin again at home. Information on our trip to Thomond on 12th will be available at training next week.

Sat 15 Oct Update
OCRFC Under 12 had a great morning of rugby with a very sporting team form Mallow. After a disappointing start to the day (a late minute cancellation by Bantry and Crosshaven pulling out earlier in the week), gary's plans for a blitz run with the precision of the Italian train timetable was in tatters. Instead we had two equally matched teams from Mallow and Old Christians facing each other for two matches.Highlights of the day included Feargal's tackle on a Mallow player which came close to that Donnacha O'Callaghan moment with the red briefs, Ollies scrum half try from the back of the scrum (even when full house was called!), Sean O'Driscoll's valiant effort to play after a heavy tackle, Aaron Monaghan enjoying life in the front row and Tomas Lane working as a forward in the ruck!A moment we are fairly sure that has not been seen to date was the referee relying on Mallows wing to translate to their Polish prop why he was being penalised for coming in from the side in a ruck. We might just have been looking at the begining of Poland's team for the 2019 World Cup!
Many thanks to coaches Eoin and Michael x2 from Mallow for making the trip , to Anne Marie and Rachel for managing the sandwich bar, all who made and brought sandwiches, parent who helped on the pitch and most of all to the 43 players who turned up in poor weather and gave us a great exhibition in rugby and sportsmanship.

Oct 1st 2011
The 2011/2012 Season is well on the road. We have over 27 registered players this season including a number of first time players who are very welcome. Our first match against mallow was like a mini blitz in its own right with both clubs fielding two full teams. Everybody got a game in fantastic weather and it has set the season off to a great start. WE are looking forward to some soft weather in the weeks ahead when the lads can start to slip and slide their way around the pitch.
This years coaches (Liam, Hugh and Gary) are very grateful for the continued support of many of the parents who have rowed in to help at the coaching sessions. All welcome to help and if anybody is interested in pursuing the mini coaching course would be great.
In addition to our upcoming games we have a trip planned to Thomond Park on 12th Nov for the first heineken Cup match of the season between Munster and Northampton Saints. There will be space on the bus so parents with tickets are welcome to join us! More details to follow but give your name to Gary for the time being.
