We were glad to hear the final whistle in a game where we should have won comfortably, but I guess that’s what you get with so many young players.
We did play well, with Smitty and Alan O’Dea having a couple of lineout steals each, but we also butchered a number of scoring chances, having broken the Muskerry defensive line.
We dominated the opening stages and took the lead on 5 minutes, when Laz took a clever reverse pass from Eugene Redmond to touch down near the posts. The conversion giving us a 7pts to nil lead.
Muskerry got a penalty on the quarter hour mark, but that was cancelled out by Laz three minutes later.
Muskerry then had a good spell, but we drove them from our line back to the twenty-two, before we conceded a soft penalty.
On our next attack, great play put Eddie in space and the winger duly touched down.
Minutes later it could have been even better, with the line beckoning, a neck high tackle, earned us a penalty, but with a yellow card coming for the Muskerry man, we got involved in a bit of retaliation, the penalty was reversed and a man from each side was binned.
The half time whistle saw us lead by 10 pts to 6.
Minutes into the second half, we scored a great try. The ball went through many hands and this time the scoring pass WAS given and Eddie popped up on the opposite wing to finish a great move.
It was now 20 points to 6 and we were thinking of a bonus point, but we seemed to lose our way a little. We should have added the 4th try minutes later as we again broke the Muskerry line, but the scoring pass never came and the chance was lost.
Instead we coasted through the next 30 minutes before Muskerry finally got back into the game. They had a converted try and a couple of stoppages meant we were not sure what time was left. We held on however though we were happy to hear the whistle.
We are on the right road with a young squad, I suppose we will have to get used to a rollercoaster ride as they learn their trade.
