Muskerry 22 Old Christians 31
This was a tough hard Junior League game played out in Muskerry on a fine Autumn day. Three weeks ago, we travelled to play them in the O’Neill Cup and we came off second best.
We conceeded a penalty within a minute today, but two minutes later, John Marnell levelled matters with a fine kick.
John would go on to convert 6/7 kicks, with his only failure striking the post.
We were playing well now and when fine passing saw the ball reach Eddie Delahunt, the winger scorched over in the corner, with John adding the points.
We than started to fall foul of the referee. Our speed off the line was superb, but we were blown a couple of time for offside and we eventually had a player yellowed carded.
I would query some of those penalties, as we really were terrific off the line. (Ireland v Japan anyone?)
Minutes later, things got worse, when a lazy tackle, saw the arms slide up and the ref rightly issued another card.
Down to 13, we conceded a converted try, but five minutes later, we were in the Muskerry 22. Matthew O’Connell blocked an attempted clearance and in the confusion,
the home side conceded a penalty.
John duly did the rest.
We led now by 13pts to 10 and better was to come. Some great work by the pack, saw the ball released out the line and when the ball reached Eddie, he really had a lot to do.
He first stood up his man, then accelerated and a deft hand-off saw him touch down in the corner.
Naturally John converted.
It was a 20pts to 10 lead at the break and John stretched this within five minutes, before the home side got over for an unconverted try.
On twenty minutes, a flare up in midfield saw a player from each side yellow carded.
Within minutes another John Marnell penalty, pushed our lead out to 26 points to 15 and with some 35 minutes gone, Laz put the game to bed.
Fielding a poor clearance kick just inside the home half, he sliced through the Blues defence to score far out on the right.
John’s conversion attempt struck the upright.
We were now leading by 31 points to 15, but down to 14 men. We were under pressure, but a fine Tim Hegarty last ditch tackle saved a try.
Just before the final whistle the home side did get over for a converted try, but we saw the game out for a fine win.
Muskerry had a big pack, but they could make little progress against some fierce tackling from Christians, while our young backline will surely trouble most teams.
We have brought in a number of young players this season and the likes of Daniel O’Mahony has been a revelation, Sisky was Sisky, while Cian Smyth provides leadship in the pack.
With a lot of young players you will get some hairy moments as they attempt some scary stuff, but if we keep taking the blood pressure tablets, we should be all right.
Next up is a trip to Cobh for what should be another lively affair.
Some pictures from the game.
Eddie scores in the corner, Jimmy looks pleased.
Eddie scores again.
Help is at hand.
Laz calls, Sisky points and SOB tries to hold on to his cap.
Try of the game as Laz scores.
Looking to poach as Shane thinks about tomorrow’s aches and pains.
Surely wing forward offside Ref?
Laz calls as John prepares to pass.
Smitty wins a lineout as John does his Mr. Bean impression.
Spot the ball.
