A massive injury list, meant we could only muster about 16 players for this league game and when the home side went 12 points to the good with only 5 minutes gone, things did not look good.
With so many young players forced into action, the team could have been forgiven for losing heart, but they regrouped to give a fighting display that deserverved more that a losing bonus point.
Twelved minutes in, Ryan, aided by a very strong breeze, opened our account with a fine penalty.
Three minutes later, Mathew O’Connell, playing his first match in a long time, scorched over for a great try.
Ryan converted from wide out and there was just two points in it, Kinsale leading 12 to 10. The home side came back with another converted try and we turned around to face a strengthing wind, behind 17pts to 10.
We would make light of the conditions in this half however and Conor Kiely’s try after four minutes, saw us cut the gap to two points. We continued to force the pace and when Laz cut through on ten minutes, Ryan’s conversion saw us lead for the first time by 22 points to 17.
We kept pressing now, but could not increase the gap, despite so gallant efforts. With just minutes on the clock,
Kinsale got a try near the posts and the conversion pust the score to Kinsale 24 Old Christians 22.
There was much to admire in this display and with a couple of players due back shortly, we can hope for better luck on the field.
