“When the going gets tough, the tough get going.”
So went the song from the 80’s and when it came to a do or die match today, we dug out the
win that was needed.
We needed to beat Thurles AND deny them a losing bonus point.
We started against a strong wind, but within four minutes, we were ahead.
A great break by Craig sliced open the Tipp defence and when he was stopped,
there was Laz on his shoulder to score near the posts. He converted his own try
and we were seven points up.
Twelve minutes later, it was 14-0 as Matthew O’Connell got over for a try and Laz
That was the score at the break, but shortly after the restart, a Thurles player suffered
an ankle injury. The game was held up for a while and we seemed to lose a bit of
concentration and the Tipp side got in for a try.
The difference this time however was that we were playing with our heads and when the penalty
chance came our way, Laz wisely opted for the kick as we needed to stop Thurles getting a
losing bonus point.
We were playing clever rugby now, pinning the visitors back and Jacko was the next to get on
the score sheet, for Laz to again convert.
Twelve minutes before the end, Chris O’Donnell crashed over and with the final whistle beckoning
came the best try of the game. A loop from Laz, ball out the backs and the impressive Sean Lynch
got in at the corner.
With time almost up, we were awarded a penalty on the 22 and perhaps in a sign of new found
maturity from the team, Laz converted for a final score of 34 points to 5.
Our back looked threatening all through, with Craig impressing in a powerful, disciplined, display.
Laz controlled matters and wingman Eddie continues to impress.
The pack was impressive and I though Smithy and Sam, in particular, had great games.
Another difference today, was that we could introduce a couple of subs from the bench.
So hopefully onward and upward for next season.
Some match pictures.
A dummy lineout works well.
Another great take.
Ruck inspection time.
Pick and go.
Pump enters the fray.
Another quick lineout.
Shane carries, (for the last time???)
Smithy had a fine game today.
