Having bitten my fingernails to the quick yesterday watching Munster, the last thing I needed was another nail biting match, but that was what we got.
We dominated the first quarter hour, but all we had to show for it was a Tim Hegarty penalty.
In their first attack however, poor tackling allowed Castleisland in for a very soft try.
Ten minutes later, the Kerry team got in for a second similar score. Things were not looking good. We were not playing clever rugby. Loose kicking allowed Castleisland to make ground as they had some great broken field runners.
Just before the break, we launched an attack, which forced a penalty some 7 metres out, a quick tap and Jack Burke crashed over. Tim’s conversion saw us lead by 13 points to 10 at the break.
If we thought we were now settled, we got a rude awakening on the restart. Attempting to run the ball, we conceded an intercept try and found ourselves behind by 13 pts to 15.
The kick-off did not go 10 metres and we then conceded a penalty and it looked as if the wheels were coming off the wagon.
Just then however, we began to play rugby, making good ground close in to the rucks and being a lot more structured. Some clever kicks began to have an effect and when Liam Carty got in for a try, we were back in front by 18 pts to 15.
Within minutes, Luke Egan had added another try and at 23 points to 15, we began to close out the game.
The game was finally put to bed when Tim sliced his way through for the final try of the game with Liam Carthy adding the points.
It seems, we had lost our last 7/8 under 18 finals, so it was great to finally get our hands on a trophy.
A great win, once we got our game together and there are some promising players in this group,
but what about my fingernails.
Some match pictures and we hope to have more later in the week.
