Rathcooney NOTE CHANGE , 12:00PM
5TH game of the league
On a biting cold Sunday morning we welcomed Mallow to Rathcooney, game was changed from the Saturday to accommodate Mallow. They turned up with a large squad but only 13 were registered so we had to field 13 players.
We fortunately had a large number of substitutes, which makes a pleasant change. The game was delayed further by the Referee going to Mallow instead of Rathcooney, we didn’t kick off till 12.40pm.
It was a hard fought battle from the beginning and through grit and determination we finally came away as the winners. We won the coin toss and Conor opted to play with the wind in the first half. Josh once again opened up the scoring and gave us an early lead with a converted try. Followed shortly by another try this one scored by Conor unconverted bringing our score to 12 – 0. It didn’t remain 12 nil for long as Mallow got on the score sheet with two tries of their own one converted one not converted bringing the half time score to 12 all.
The second half saw us playing into the wind. We conceded an early penalty to Mallow which was in their kickers range putting them in the lead for the first time in the game. Old Christians Captain fantastic Conor was forced to leave the field with what we hope is only a twisted ankle and we wish him a speedy recovery.
It took Old Christians awhile to settle down again once Conor was gone; it shows how much we rely on Conor. We did settle down and started scoring again through Oscar who scored the first of 2 tries, first one was converted, followed by a very impressive run by Akram keeping up his habit of scoring in every game he plays (unconverted). He gathered the ball inside his own 10 meter area and ran the length of the pitch to score. The final try (unconverted) was another spectacular run right through the Mallow pack from the half way line by Oscar bringing his league tally to 7 tries and making him the lead try scorer in the Old Christians under 16 league team followed closely by Conor and Akram on 5 and Josh on 4.
We will have a very big test next Saturday when we travel to Sunday Well who are the currently in second place on the league table with 14 points but with a game in hand. We are the league table leaders with 18 points with only Sundays Well left to play. Douglas/Carrigaline are on 12 points in third place also with a game in hand.
