Dave is rising star.

Dave O’Connell, formerly of this Parish, has been honoured with the AIL Division 2A Rising Star award for his role in Highfield’s successful title and promotion-winning season.

Dave, the son of Club Hon. Sec. Adrian and brother of Junior no. 8 Alan, began his rugby with Old Christians.

At the age of about 13, he came under the coaching of that dream ticket, Dave Philpott and Hughie Healy, (one quietly spoken and who dealt in small details, the other a raving lunatic.)

You decide.

Later on he played for Sunday’s Well, before settling with Highfield.

I have some video somewhere of Dave playing at Under 13 level, (he was about 6 foot even then), and I might dig it out.

He is regularly seen in Rathcooney lending support and who knows we may see him back for a season or two before he hangs up his boots.

Cheering on the lads.
A very young Dave lending support in Musgrave Park.

Dave making a tackle at under-age level.
Dave on the charge, probably at Under 18 level.

Strong in the line out.

Looking for the action.

With family after winning an Irish Club team cap.

Starring for Highfield as they won promotion.
